Summer solstice
In the Central European time zone the summer solstice always is on 21st of June. In the 20th century she could also be on the 22nd of June.
The summer solstice is in many countries, like in Central Europe and the USA, the beginning of the season summer.
In Great Britain and Ireland, however, the summer season begins on the 1st of May and ends on the 31st of July, the summer solstice lies in the middle of the season.
In many countries in which today the calenarian summer begins on the 20th/21st of June the day of the summer solstice is still called „Mittsommer“ what possibly harks back to an old common Stone Age calendar.
The day of the summer solstice is always looked by the people as a mystic day, is often accompanied by worldly and religious festivities.
Midsummer fires at the 18th June 2011
Sonnwendfeuer are burnt down every year during the days around the summer solstice on the 21st of June as light and life symbols. The origin of this ancient rite is not cleared.
The people sing and dance around the fire, until it has burnt down completely. They jump about the fire or turn with burning old brooms in the circle. In the some regions of Aurstria the young people burn a straw doll.
In the Wachau, the midsummer fires, has been to a big event, at which on the Danube lights swim and fireworks will be burned.
On the mountains signs are often formed made out of several fires. Especially well one can look at these fires with fair weather and clear view from a higher situated view point. |
